Interview With Don Downs
Who are your clients?
My clients enjoy applying their passion to help others and improve the world. They are often personal/life or nutrition/health coaches, or other entrepreneurs who want to make a living doing what they love. They usually have:
Before working with me, many of my clients are frustrated because although they love what they’re doing, they are not producing enough income to keep their business sustainable.
Sound like you? Let's talk and see if we are a good fit for each other
I know I need to do more with technology, but technology and I don't always get along. Can you help me?
Yes! Many of my clients start out not being very comfortable with technology–they know they need to use it, but they’ve had bad experiences in the past.
My passion is recognizing where technology is truly helpful and helping others learn to benefit from it. But let’s be clear I am not going to try to have you use technology for technology’s sake. I realize that technology doesn’t always work as well as it should, and sometimes it’s overkill for the task at hand. Instead, I find the tools that really work, and then teach them in simple, easy-to-understand language.
Are you a technology expert?
Well, I don’t know if this question really has an answer. Technology is constantly evolving, so “expert” is kind of a fluid label. However, I think I’ve always enjoyed tinkering with technology.
For example, in sixth grade, I became so fascinated with computers that eventually my mother forbade from saying the word “computer” (which I worked around by saying “that word Mom won’t let me say” and then continuing on with my story).
I’ve always enjoyed researching new technologies and learning as much about them as I can. I guess that’s why I ended up being the “family IT director” and a “go to” guy for friends and coworkers.
This love for computers and technology led me to double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in college. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I worked in software development for about 15 years, then transitioned into management, systems engineering, and technical sales. I earned an MBA along the way.
What kind of technology can you help me with?
My system uses existing apps to help you work more efficiently. While my system works with Mac and Windows computers, iPhone/iPad, and Android phones and tablets, I do my best work with Macs and iPhone/iPad.
If you are considering purchasing a new phone or computer, please contact me first and let’s talk before you buy, so that you can be sure you are getting a device that will work for you instead of against you.
I'm really busy and overwhelmed. How much time is involved before I get results?
If you’re busy and overwhelmed, then you will certainly benefit from my programs! I help you develop better focus and clear your mind so you can think more creatively and clearly. As business coach Matthew Kimberly says, “Overwhelm is often not having too much to do; it’s not knowing the next right step.”
My programs not only help you figure out those “next right steps,” they help you be more focused and work more efficiently so that you will actually get them done!
What results can I expect from working with you?
While everyone's results vary, the end result is that you get more clients and earn more money doing what you love. My programs help you:
Key benefits include:
You'll learn to have more fun and be more efficient working “on” your business, leaving you more time and energy to work with your clients.
Why do I need you? Can't I just do this on my own?
Yes, you can learn much of what I teach you by reading books or surfing the web and finding videos or articles. But is this your genius work? Would you rather spend your time searching for information, sorting through multiple responses (some of which conflict with each other), trying to figure out what actually applies to your situation? Or would you rather spend your time doing the work you are passionate about, that you created your business to do in the first place?
I sort through the vast amount of information out there and bring you just what you need. If you read all the tech reviews, you may think you need every new app and the newest or most expensive hardware available, when in actuality, a mid-range product and the apps that ship with it will more than meet your needs.
Where do you work?
I live in the Raleigh, NC area. While I love working with clients face-to-face, I can meet “virtually” with clients who live almost anywhere. With easy-to-use screen sharing software, I can show you a technique, and then you can practice it with me watching (and coaching, if needed).
Why I Do What I Do
In Book Yourself Solid® we coach you to develop a "Why you do it" statement as part of your Personal Brand Identity. The "Why you do it" isn't tied to your job or your business... it's a part of who you are. Even if you changed jobs or built a new business, you'd have the same "why."
Here are three of my passions that drive my "why," along with a short description of how they are relevant in my current business.
Making the world a better place
Deep down, I believe we all share a common mission: to make the world a better place. My ideal clients share this passion. They are often coaches who enjoy helping others achieve their potential.
I've always enjoyed helping others.
Chances are you started your business in order to bring your passion to the world and help others, too. But unless your business is actually making money, there's a limit to how much time and energy you can afford to spend in it.
That's why I'm passionate about helping others get more clients and grow their business. I want to make getting more clients and making more money easy—and fun!
As a Book Yourself Solid® Certified Coach I help coaches and other heart-centered entrepreneurs get more clients, make more money, and have more free time.
93% of those who implemented the Book Yourself Solid® system had a 40% increase in revenue their first year.
Using technology to make life better
I love using technology as a tool to help make your life better, keep you more focused, or help you work more efficiently. But I don't like wasting time getting technology to work. So rest assured that I am not going to try to get you to use technology for technology’s sake.
I am constantly on the lookout for technology that works—tools that will actually save you time and money. I introduce those tools and provide coaching to be sure they really do help you work more efficiently.
Put all of that together and you have my tagline:
Making the world better bit bit.
Worried about "Street Cred?"
Yeah, I have that, too.
